Understanding the Process of Electronic Diesel Tuning

Diesel engines today have various electronic and computerised parts. You can optimise these elements through electronic diesel tuning.

The process optimises the parameters in the engine control unit or the ECU. To understand how tuning works, you should first know about the ECU.

ECU and the Electronic Diesel Tuning Process

The electronic control unit is the brain of the diesel engine. It monitors all the sensors that control the performance of your vehicle. By optimising the parameters in the ECU, you improve the vehicle’s emissions, fuel economy, and performance.

The ECU has pre-programmed chips that are similar to what you find in a desktop computer. It uses the input sensors and the output parts to control the functions of the engine. Some of the sensors that the computer monitors include the camshaft sensors and crankshaft sensor.

The car manufacturer inputs the default settings on a programmable memory chip. It uses the information from sensors to compute the required output such as igniting the coil to start the engine or the amount of fuel injected.

Different Types of ECU

There are various types of ECUs used on vehicles depending on their use. It can be for the traction control, air conditioning, body functions, engine, transmission, and airbags, just to name a few.

Some vehicle models have more than one ECU combined into a powertrain control module. Although it is more convenient having all ECUs in a single location, you risk potential errors because of the longer wires going to the component it controls.

Most modern models have a communication line where different modules share data. It removes redundant sensors from the system. For instance, the speed sensor monitors the speed of the wheel and provides data to the anti-lock braking module.

The engine ECU connects to the onboard diagnostic connector and sends data to other modules. That’s why you flash tune the engine ECU if you want to improve the overall performance of your vehicle.

Professional Electronic Diesel Tuning

There are infinite ways to tune a diesel engine. There’s more to the results than an improvement in your vehicle’s power. The tuner needs to consider various factors before starting the electronic diesel tuning process.

With a simple tune, you can expect up to 30 percent improvement in torque and power. However, the stock parts would be the limiting factor. If you want to increase the total output, then you also need to invest in intakes, exhausts, heavy-duty clutches, free-flowing intercoolers, and other aftermarket parts.

A professional tuner can make the modifications to achieve your requirements. One can also provide you with information regarding ideal settings for your engine. Some engines could benefit from changing the exhaust settings, while others need lower torque to improve the mixture.

Let Flash Diesel help you with your tuning needs. Our team has the experience of working with different vehicles from supercars to road bikes and everything in between. Contact us today to learn more about the services we have to offer.
